Grasshopper's opened in the
fall of 1992, on the week that Superman "died". While
other stores of the early nineties promoted "collectibility",
Grasshopper's has always been about reading great comics.
We promoted great comics then and we continue to highlight
the best new comics today.
A lot has changed since 1992! Since
that time we've introduced quite a few changes to the Long
Island comic book world. We introduced Computerized
Subscription Services with the most complete range of
services available anywhere, completely tailorable to meet
each fan's needs. As the internet emerged we were the
first store to introduce a Weekly New Releases Email for our
customers (and continue to produce the best weekly email on
LI!) And of course, we've established the best trade
paperback selection available, with thousands of titles in
stock, including every Marvel and DC trade in print.
And of course the store itself has changed dramatically!
Over the years we've changed the layout countless times to
keep things exciting as comics and games continue to evolve.
All this has led us to win a bunch of awards,
including being voted "Long Island's Favorite Comic Shop" by
the readers of the Long Island Voice. We also were
chosen as Capital City Comics' "Master Retailer of the
Year." Grasshopper's Owner, John Riley, has also
received an Eisner Nomination and been featured in Newsday
as a "Young Entrepreneur of the Year". John writes a
highly regarded column read by comic retailers worldwide,
and was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for the
Game Manufacturer's Association Retail Division.
One of the things we're most proud of is our
Annual Holiday Fund Raising Raffle which each year raises
thousands of dollars to help sick and terminally ill
children. Grasshopper's is currently spearheading an
effort to make this a National event, bringing the forces of
the comic industry to help those in need.
In the mid-nineties Grasshopper's also began
selling games to fill the void left by all the gaming stores
that had closed down. Since that time we've grown to
have the best hobby game selection on Long Island, with a
massive selection of miniatures, board games, collectible
card games, and role playing. But we're gamers
ourselves too, and have built one of the best play
environments anywhere. We have regular weekly
tournaments for a wide variety of games. In fact, in
2006 we were declared one of WizKids Top 50 Venues for
HeroClix tournaments in the US. Combined with our ccg
tournaments, our weekly open gaming, and our famous
Warhammer Leagues, and Grasshopper's is the place to be
gaming on Long Island. |
